πŸ€“ Quick Ed

How to leverage political incentives to change regulations that benefit your business.

Let's say you're developing your business and have your new product/service in a particular location.

It's time to get it to market, exciting!

Oh no, but… You just ran into regulations that don't allow you to do so.

Is this the end of your business? It doesn't have to.

Then, what do you do?

So, whether it's a monopoly protected by regulations so they do not get threatening competition or a set of laws that don't allow your product directly, you can do some things.

Option 1) Get your business based in Vitalia and leverage PrΓ³spera's legal framework πŸ˜‰, or

Option 2) Leverage political incentives to change some regulations

Let me elaborate briefly:

So, there it was, Uber a while ago, trying to expand operations to New York. They got hit with a cease-and-desist letter from the Taxi Limousine Commission in NY right away.

A request for them to stop trying to get their business there, backed by law…

As you may know, Uber now operates in NY, and not only them but more similar services!

What happened?

Every policy output is the result of political input. Every politician makes every decision based on their benefit to reelection.

"Politicians will do what you want in one of two cases:

  • (a) they think you can help them win their next election, or

  • (b) they think you can cost them their next election.

Otherwise, you don’t matter at all."

– Bradley Tusk

So, how do you use political incentives to achieve the outcomes you need to succeed in your business?

  • For point a – Negotiate directly with politicians to help them achieve the benefits that they want through your business. (eg, they want voters; if your product helps X% of people and they allow your product, the politician is the hero who will get those votes from those people).

  • For point b – Leverage your customers as political advocates. (eg, if the politician doesn't allow this product that will help X% of people, they will lose those votes).

Bradley Tusk was Uber's first political advisor and was instrumental in developing its strategy to disrupt taxi monopolies. This is one of the most fascinating stories in the recent history of regulatory hacking.
